Classroom instruction focuses on gun laws in Tennessee, legal responsibilities, and how to select the weapons and gear you need to protect yourself and the public while at work. Range training includes hands-on time with weapons to improve weapon manipulation skills. Students must score 70 or above on both the written and shooting exams. Training Requirements:
An armed guard must complete eight additional hours in the classroom training covering:
- Legal limitations on the use of a firearm
- Handling of a firearm
- Safety and maintenance of firearms
In addition, an armed guard applicant must complete an additional four hours of marksmanship training and achieve a minimum of 70% on any silhouette target course approved by the commissioner.
Renewals:
Armed Guards/Officers must renew their license registration every two (2) years.
Every two (2) years, armed security guards must complete four hours of refresher training and requalify the use of a firearm by achieving a minimum of 70% on any silhouette target course approved by the commissioner before the renewal of their guard registration.
Late Renewal Time Period:
There is a ninety (90) day late renewal period afforded for license renewal.
Armed security officers may renew during this time, but are not authorized to work with an expired license.

Eligibility Requirements:
Be at least 21 years of age for registration as an armed security guard.
Successfully completed the unarmed security guard license class within twelve (12) months of the training date selected.
Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien.
Have not have been declared by any court of competent jurisdiction incompetent because of mental defect or disease unless a court of competent jurisdiction has since declared the applicant capable.
If convicted in any jurisdiction of any of the crimes listed (below), have completed serving a sentence or court-ordered probation at least five (5) years before application.
Conviction of the following offenses shall disqualify an applicant, subject to the conditions stated:
Any felony
Any misdemeanor involving:
- Shooting a firearm or other weapon
- Shoplifting
- Assault and battery or other act of violence against persons or property
- Crimes involving the sale, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances, controlled substance analogues, drugs, or narcotics;
- Theft of property
- Theft of services
Not be suffering from habitual drunkenness or narcotics addiction or dependence;
Not having any disability that, in the opinion of the commissioner, prevents the applicant from performing the duties of a security guard/officer.
Be of good moral character.
Must meet the training requirements.
Submit electronic fingerprints for processing TBI and or FBI criminal history checks.

Yes. The course is has been thoroughly reviewed and fully approved by Private Protective Services and meets all requirements under Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-35-118 that states:

(A) Legal limitations of the use of a firearm
(B) Handling of a firearm
(C) Safety and maintenance

Yes. We have several types of pistols to choose from, and there is no charge to use the weapon if you register for the class. You will need to purchase 50 rounds of ammunition; re-loads are not allowed.
